If you are a sign tragic like me then you will love this book.
I wandered into my local ABC shop and immediately heard a book calling out.. look at me, look at me! I did, albeit briefly and purchased it sooner thereafter.
Geoff Hocking (author) has a passion for old signs that is evident from his opening forward.. When I was 15 years old, and on it reads like a trip down memory lane. Geoff grew up in Bendigo (Victoria) and from a young age realised the beauty and social importance of advertising signage.
He presents some marvellous photographs of old signs including hand painted signs, advertising hoardings, windows, billboards, neon and other types of advertising that engages the reader.
From his own collection of photographs together with images from libraries, each picture is accompanied with well written commentary and supporting descriptions that had me reminiscing down memory lane.
Besides being a wonderful writer, a thorough photographer, Geoff gives us a very good overview of Australian signage from the 1800’s right up to today. From a ghost sign perspective, there are many examples of fine old ghost signs, including a few from our own collection.
We highly recommend this fine book, to anyone interested in Australian signs.

The book I purchased at the ABC Shop (above) had a different cover from some of the others sold online.
